Tips for the Carbon Conscious Traveler

Traveling can have a large impact on the environment. Reducing energy while you travel will also reduce carbon. Some simple choices that you make before and during your travel can do a lot in protecting the environment. Our efforts to establish sustainable tourism for the Grand Haven area include minimizing the carbon footprint of those who choose us as a vacation destination. We ask that you consider the following as you plan for your next trip to the Grand Haven area.
Before You Leave:
- Set thermostat and water heater at low settings as to not waste energy while you are on vacation
- Appliances like TVs, VCRs & microwaves should be unplugged before you leave (these appliances use energy even when they are off)
During Your Travels:
- Participate in lodging environmental programs (many have instructions in the room on how to let staff know you do not need linens or towels changed every day)
- Turn off all lights and appliances in the room when you are not there
- Close the curtains when not in the room to save on energy
- Participate in the lodging property's recycling program
- If like a night light, bring one with you (do not leave the bathroom light on all night)
- Resist the urge to grab every brochure you see (only take the ones you think you will need)
- Bring your own camera (as using disposable cameras generates more waste)
- Turn off your lights when you leave the room
- If you are hot or cold adjust with appropriate clothing if possible instead of turning up the thermostat
- Turn off the computer (conserve energy by using your computer's sleep mode instead of a screensaver)
- Unplug unused electronics (even your mobile phone)
- Take shorter showers (less hot water means using less energy)
- Recycle-paper, plastic and glass
- Buy organic food (there are chemicals used in modern agriculture that pollute the water supply, and require more energy to produce than organics)
- Bring cloth bags when shopping (use cloth or reusable bags instead of plastic or paper bags)
- Buy products locally (reduce the amount of energy required to drive your products to your store)
- Buy minimally packaged goods (buy products with less packaging or buy in bulk)
- Buy produce that is in season (less energy is wasted for the production of out of season produce)
- Use public transportation wherever possible (such as a train, bus, bicycle, or just walk)
- Plan ahead (do several errands in one trip, carpool, and use uncongested routes)
